It was my first timw making this model, so it took me about 10 hours. Most of that time was spent tdoing the precreasing for the shell, which required me to divide the paper up into 78ths. For the extra careful observer, you may notice that I changed the back feet from the original model. This is because I didn't realize until the very end that the back feet wouold be the color of the opposite side of the paper. This modification gives the entire one color, and slightly more of a web-like look for the back feet. I hope Mr. Lang can forgive me 8-O.

I also made her a cute little mouse using pink paper with white on one side. This makes a charming little mouse with a pink nose, pink ears, and pink tail. I put the quarter in there to give you a sense of scale.

I got my first commission yesterday! I had some of my models out for display during a city-wide "studio tour". The tour happens once a year and all the artists in Greensboro open their doors to the public. My dad is a sculptor in Greensboro, so he let me set up a small display at his shop. Anyway, a lady came in and thought that my Cartoon Mouse was just too cute. But, she said she wanted it to be more cat-proof than just out of thin paper. So I made her one about twice as big out of Canson Art Paper, and wet-folded it. For those of you who don't know what wet-folding is, its when you use much thicker paper and get it soggy with water, adn fold it wet. Then when you're almost done, you put it under a heat gun and it dries hard. It's an interesting technique that lends more permanancy to a model, but is about 10 times more frustrating. I was able to get some shots of it before I had to give it to her and *lucky you can check them out right here!

After having a horrible time at making a Beaver (which turned out more like a Godzilla-Mosquito), One of my friends suggested making the Geico Gecko. I didn't get it looking just like it, but I think I captured some of the cartooniness. I'm also pretty proud of the tail which is about 2.5 the length of the body. I even had two extra points towards the end of the tail that I though about using in some way, but eventually just ended up tucking them into the folds. I know Robert Lang would have something to say about not maximizing my points and being the most efficient with my folds, but eh... whattaya gunna do? Check out some of Robert Langs Origami at

Today I attended a rally at NC A&T University with John Edwards as the speaker. It was a good talk, and Edwards brought up a lot of good points about the debate he and Cheney had last night. But that's not the point of the story... The point is I was standing around for about 2 and a half hours with nothing to do, so I made a nice little Moth out of my ticket. It was about as complex as I could get it, since the paper was so thick, but it turned out pretty cute.

So, I originally started out trying to make a flying fox. Halfway through I realized I didn't have a very precise idea of what a flying fox looked like, I started to turn it into a cat. Then fro some reason, it just ended up turning into a dog. Ironically, I folded the dog from the same base as the Mouse that made out of my power bill. If only I could make a decent cat model, then I'd have some sort of origamical theory of evolution... This one was made out of an old map I printed up on an inkjet printer.

Made this one out of the stub from my Duke Power Bill. I like expression on the face, and the cute little teeth, but I would have liked the body to be a bit bigger. In case you were wondering, the bill amount was $104.

I've been playing around with faces and masks lately. I like the idea of getting round forms out of straight folds. Hopefully, I will be posting more experiments in the next couple of weeks. I did this one in February. Allen and I had everyone in the class make 40 cranes which equaled out to 1000. Then I stapled them all to a piece of plywood in this design. It took a long, long time...

This is the makeshift lighting studio for all my pieces. I made the softbox out of an old white paper bag, and some inking paper for the seamless backdrop. Then I just put a desk lamp in the top of the bag... The only downside is I can't shoot anything bigger than my fist.

A fairly easy model of a cartoon mouse. If you make it with paper that's white on one side and pink on the other, you can have a white mouse with pink ears, tale and nose. Diagrams are available.

Yet another Phoenix model. This one was co-designed with Clay Britton, a student in the "Origami and Math" class. It is a much simpler model, but quite pleasing due to the elongated tail feathers. Like all other models, this one is folded from an uncut single sheet of square paper.

I used a yellow square of paper with red colored on the other side to achieve the red stomach. There is enough stiffness in the beak to support the entire body if one wanted to have it feeding on a flower.

I thought I'd post a back view of the model. I like the layering of paper to create the feathers. Incidentally, The reason I have so many Phoenix models is because that was the mascot of my University. I took an Origami and Mathematics class and one of the assignments was to create your own Phoenix model. This model is the one I turned in for the assignment, the others are from when I was TAing the class.
